About the Company

The airline is an aviation foray of one of the oldest conglomerates in India that has a presence in diverse industries such as textile, food and beverage, chemicals, plantations, media and real estate. Known as a low-cost carrier (LCC) that aims to make air travel affordable and accessible to the masses, the company was incorporated in 2004 and was named as "Best Domestic Airline For Excellence in Quality and Efficient Service" by Pacific Area Travel Writers Association and “Best Performing Airline" in Asia and Africa of all Airbus A320 operators by Airbus. The airline has flown more than 80 million passengers and has had the fewest flight cancellations and one of the lowest customer complaints in the industry in fiscal 2021.

The airline was keen on revamping its operations by introducing enterprise mobility that could help them optimize its processes, enhance employee productivity and ensure the best-in-class customer experience for its flyers.

The company rightly chose Android devices management since that aligned with the employees using Android in a personal capacity and turned to Scalefusion MDM as its preferred solution to manage the inventory of Android devices.

Business Challenge

The airline wanted to optimize its operations to extend the best-in-class service to its customers while flying. Their focus was to smoothen floor operations- from self-check-in kiosks to the devices used by coordinators handling the airline, cargo, operations and baggage data.

The company also wanted to accommodate the need of their staff to use personal devices during their tasks. Several of the airline’s ground-handling employees needed to access corporate information and apps on the go and facilitating the same on the devices they already used and loved seemed like the most feasible as well as an economical option. Since the majority of the employees were using Android devices for personal use, leveraging Google’s Android Enterprise was possible.

The primary challenge was to provision a multitude of devices that were employee-owned and geographically distributed with work apps and bring them under management purview. This needed to happen over the air since the workforce was heavily dispersed. Maintaining the security of the sensitive customer, billing and flight information across devices was critical and so was ensuring the employee data privacy on the BYO devices.

Considering the dynamic need of handling a fragmented device inventory over a distributed geography, the company chose Scalefusion for its device management needs.

Solution

The airline was successful in accomplishing its mobility goals with the power-packed bundle of Google’s Android Enterprise and Scalefusion mobile device management. The BYO device enrollment could be easily implemented with Scalefusion MDM and the devices were business-ready without any manual intervention by the IT teams. The devices were provisioned with work apps using Managed Google Play. The chosen applications were installed and configured remotely via Scalefusion Application Management.

One of the key concerns to address was how the employee-owned devices could contribute to organizational mobility without costing the company its precious data as well as employee privacy. Scalefusion’s BYOD management along with Android Enterprise’s Work Profile helped in containerization which facilitated compartmentalizing the work and personal data. The IT team gained complete control over the work apps and content, without compromising the employees’ data privacy.

The BYOD management mode helped the company apply policies selectively on the work container, which is the work apps and data and the employee data and content on the devices were untouched.
